Trenholm State Setting New Enrollment Record

(Montgomery, AL)—Trenholm State Community College (TSCC) welcomed 2,051 students this fall, marking its largest enrollment in more than two decades. In fall 2019, the College admitted 10.5 percent more students over the previous year. “The steady growth of our student population validates our passion and purpose to make Trenholm State the college of choice among prospective students,” said Trenholm State President Sam Munnerlyn.

Among the 2,051 students, 304 are dual enrollment high school students. Dual enrollment allows students to take college courses while in high school. Those courses count toward earning a high school diploma and college credit at the same time.

Outreach and recruitment efforts have increased significantly since 2017. “We focus on engaging counselors, career coaches, and high school administrators to emphasize the uniqueness of the community college experience to prospective students,” says Valerie Allen-Porterfield, director of Enrollment Management, Student Development, and College Recruiter. In Alabama, 46 percent of college-bound students attend a community college over a four-year institution, according to a new study from the Community College Research Center (CCRC) at Teachers College, Columbia University, and the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center.

As Montgomery’s only community college, TSCC has been recognized as a “valuable economic engine” within the River Region, according to a study commissioned by the United Negro College Fund – HBCUs Make America Strong: The Positive Economic Impact of Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Trenholm State’s mission is to provide comprehensive and accessible educational opportunities, including academic transfer and technical programs, designed to promote economic development, enhance workforce development, and improve the quality of life for the community.
