Mosses, AL- The Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony of Mosses Park in Lowndes County was this evening. The park has been in the works for almost two decades.
Mayor Willie B. Hill shared how he had a vision for the park when he was elected to City Council in 2001. After years of working through various obstacles the town was eventually awarded a grant to help fund the park in 2018. Hill said the town had to match the funds before the work could begin. “After two years we were able to save enough funds to match.”
The park has a walking trail, playground equipment for children, basketball court, and pavilion. The basketball court will remain closed until the state mandate is lifted by concerning contact sports at public parks.
Mayor Hill says that this park means the world to him. “The town in moving forward. We now have a place for our families to come.”
When it comes to health and wellness, Hill feels that the park’s walking trail is ideal to exercise and enjoy outside.
Mosses Police Chief DeMarcus Weems says the park will be great for families.
“Children can come play and families can connect and stay healthy. There are many opportunities at this park.”
The Town of Mosses City Council, The Lowndes County Sheriff’s Department, Representative Kelvin Lawrence, and other community leaders were in attendance.
The park does not allow pets, alcohol, ATV’s or bicycles. The hours of operation are from 5 AM until 8 PM in the summer, then from 6 AM until 7 PM during winter.
The Mosses Police Department is planning a community event in the park next month.
