Montgomery, AL– Plans are underway to chart development of the Montgomery Regional Airport (MGM) for the next 20 years. MGM leaders have spent time contemplating the path to the launch and full implementation of the planning process, which will be guided by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) with input from the community.
The engagement of airport stakeholders and public participation will be chief among planning objectives. In partnership with local officials, the airport will engage residents from the communities it serves. This includes: Montgomery, Prattville, Selma, Millbrook, Wetumpka, Pike Road, Shorter, Tuskegee, Lowndesboro, Auburn, Tallassee, Valley Grande and Notasulga.
“Our airport management team will be calling upon municipal, county, state and federal officials representing the River Region, as well as users of the airport, especially pilots and tenants. We look to also engage everyday citizens to provide feedback on the future development needs of MGM,” said Marshall Taggart Jr., Executive Airport Director.
Committees will convene for a one-day session in November to begin the first phase of the planning process. Three committees have been created.
• Citizen Advisory Committee – Appointees of municipal and county officials in the River Region
• Technical Advisory Committee – Airport users with substantial knowledge of technical aspects of the airport
• Intergovernmental Coordinating Committee – Planning and economic development professionals from Autauga, Dallas, Elmore, Lowndes, Macon, and Montgomery counties.
MGM last completed a master plan study in November 2013. A $228,968 grant awarded by the FAA in September will partially fund the multi-year process.
Taggart said, “We are grateful to receive this funding. It will assist with meeting our primary objective of drafting an up-to-date, phased development plan concept that will satisfy the needs of the airport in a safe, efficient, economical, and environmentally sound manner.”
