Marquetta Johnson Announces Bid for Montgomery City Council District 2 Seat

By Mona Davis

MONTGOMERY, AL —With a desire to lead, a willingness to serve, fresh ideas and a passion to see Montgomery move forward, Montgomery native and combat veteran Marquetta Johnson is announcing her candidacy for the District 2 seat on the Montgomery City Council.

“I am running for the District 2 seat because I strongly believe we need more unity in our city,” Johnson said. “Once we all start working together and moving in the same direction for the betterment of all our communities, then we can realize the thriving city we envision for ourselves and for our children.”

Johnson said her priorities reflect issues that are important not only to District 2 residents but resonate with Montgomery’s citizens. She said crime, vacant businesses, and disunity made it an ideal time for her to enter the race.

“I’m a mother, business owner, and a veteran who has invested in my community. I didn’t want to sit on the sidelines anymore, I wanted to be involved. I’d like to use my voice and leadership skills to build bridges across the community and get things done. District 2 deserves a representative who will work to expand law enforcement; examine the city’s role in cultivating more mental health services to prevent mass shootings and other forms of violence; stand with our military and veterans; push for meaningful employment and recreational opportunities for our youth; support small businesses and increase economic development,” she said. “Those are big goals that require teamwork, not partisanship.”

Johnson was born and reared in Montgomery. She attended Montgomery Public Schools and after graduating, entered the U.S. Army where she served her country for nine years. Her service included three deployments to Iraq and she is the recipient of 10 service medals.

She is the CEO/Broker of MJohnson Realty in Montgomery and has a strong record of community involvement including Montgomery Housing Authority, Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassador, alumnae of Leadership Montgomery’s Torchbearer Class XI, Robert E. Lee High School PTSA the Montgomery Panthers Football Team. She is also the proud mother of three children currently enrolled in MPS.

“I love this city and the residents of District 2,” said Johnson. “I’m willing to work hard and bridge the gap with unity and move our great city forward. I believe things can be better with Marquetta!”
