The Inaugural J19 Freedom Masquerade Gala took place Saturday night in the John Garrick Hardy Center at Alabama State University. The gala was presented by Hutchinson Missionary Baptist Church.
The event was hosted by Tonya Terry and Actor Hosea Chanchez from the CW/BET sitcom “The Game”.
Chanchez was born and raised in Montgomery, AL. He was baptized at Hutchinson Missionary Baptist Church at a young age. He says that his church and hometown has always been a place that’s near and dear to his heart.
Hutchinson Missionary Baptist Church Pastor-Elect Cameron Thomas was recognized for his new role at the church.
Alabama State University Director of Development Audrey Parks gave greetings on behalf of President Quinton T. Ross.
The theme for the gala was “Focusing on the importance on cultural excellence”.
Chanchez elaborated on the gala’s theme in his remarks. “The masquerade is not meant to hide our faces” he said. “But it is to symbolize freedom of speech and expression. This city is a staple of freedom, culture, celebration, and justice.”
There was a presentation for The Spirit of Cultural Excellence Award. Recipients included:
-Montgomery Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
-Sisters Judge Lloria James and Judge Samarria Duncan
(Accepting the award on their behalf was Judge Monet Gaines).
Some of the proceeds from the gala were donated to Valiant Cross Academy. Co-Founder Anthony Brock was grateful to receive the award. He shared that he was honored to be a vessel for God.
