By Gumptown Magazine Staff

Montgomery, AL- I AM MORE THAN, a racial justice organization with many community partners, is pleased to announce an event to honor the Mothers of Gynecology with an official “Anarcha, Lucy, and Betsey Day.” A Proclamation will be presented to the public. Mayor Steven Reed and Representative Kirk Hatcher have been invited say aloud the names of three women experimented on by Dr. James Marion Sims. Social distancing and face coverings are required.

February 28 to March 1 is the convergence of Black History Month and Women’s History Month. Anarcha, Lucy, and Betsey Day honors the eleven Alabama women who were experimented on with neither consent nor anesthesia by the so-called “Father of Gynecology,” Dr. J. Marion Sims.

“EVERY woman across the globe who has benefitted from the discipline of modern women’s health owes a debt to the sacrifice and suffering of these brave women,” says Michelle Browder, founder of I AM MORE THAN.

On Sunday, February 28, 2021, at 2:00 pm, I AM MORE THAN will host live art and music at One Court Square. This will be followed by a walking tour to J. Marion Sims’s office and hospital on 33 South Perry Street. We will lay flowers at the site where Sims carried out countless experiments on enslaved African men, women, and children.

On Monday, March 1, 2021, from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm, I AM MORE THAN and community partners invites the community to donate brass or metal objects to be incorporated into the public art statue that will honor the Mothers of Gynecology. Shirts and bricks can be purchased to support the erecting of the sculpture where the community can Be The Foundation of the monument. A groundbreaking for the statue will be held on Mother’s Day, May 9, 2021.
