Montgomery, AL – This week, the Alabama House Democratic Caucus helped introduce and pass several key bills to help the people of Alabama and held their weekly Wednesday Press Conference. Caucus member bills that passed include:
- HB609 sponsored by Rep. Jeremy Gray (D-Lee) establishes the Innovate Alabama Matching Grant Program allowing for matching funds to entities receiving the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) or Small Business Technology (STTR) grants. The legislation aims to improve entrepreneurial innovation and to bring new technologies to market in Alabama.
- HB305 sponsored by Rep. Laura Hall (D-Madison) which prohibits the unlawful sale of drug paraphernalia and controlled substances on or within a 1,000 foot radius from churches or schools. The legislation also adds an additional fine of $250 if the delivery or sale occurred on the campus or within the prescribed radius.
- SB183 sponsored in the Senate by Sen. Vivian Figures (D-Mobile) and led in the House by Rep. Jeremy Gray (D-Lee) to allow the Alabama Board of Nursing to draft rules which will allow licensed nurses to delegate certain tasks to healthcare workers. The Board will have the ability to determine what nursing care tasks may or may not be delegated by licensed nurses who provide nursing care in a residential community health setting.
Alabama House Democrats also held their weekly Wednesday Press Conference on April 21, 2021 at 1PM CST. The press conference speakers discussed topical issues such as the Chauvin murder conviction and the need for greater police accountability. The conference also highlighted the need for criminal justice reform and comprehensive changes in the prison system. Other issues included reaction to Rep. Holmes’ HB242, the monuments bill that would levy $10,000 daily fines for the removal of a confederate monument. The press conference was held by Rep. Chris England (D-Tuscaloosa), Rep. Barbara Boyd (D-Calhoun), and Rep. Adline Clarke (D-Mobile).
