Montgomery, AL- The Alabama Democratic Conference and the Alabama Democratic Party hosted a Statewide Conference at the Renaissance Montgomery Hotel & Spa Convention Center on Friday October 14, 2022- Saturday October 15, 2022.
This year’s theme was “Alabama Democrats Uniting: Protecting the Vote and Defending our Democracy”.
A reception was held Friday night with music by Souled Out Band. Candidates had the opportunity to speak and share their platform.
Saturday morning kicked off with The Q.D. Adams Leadership and Prayer Breakfast. “Democracy is under threat” said Sheena Gamble, member of the Montgomery County Democrats. “And because of this, we have to be united.”
Ben Jealous, President of People for the American Way was the keynote speaker for the breakfast. He shared some of the history of the Democratic party starting with the Reconstruction era, Civil Rights era, to present day. “We have to keep the faith” Jealous stated. “We must practice the golden rule of courage to save our state.”
The convention luncheon was held on Saturday. The Honorable Jeh Johnson, former Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, in the Obama Administration was the guest speaker. He talked about some of the concerns of the party and encouraged participation in the upcoming midterm elections.
“People who are engaging and active can, will, and must make a difference” Johnson shared. “We must always project optimism for the future of our nation.”
Dr. Joe L. Reed serves as Chairman of the Alabama Democratic Conference and Rev. Randy B. Kelley serves as Chairman of the Alabama Democratic Party.
